The dangers of lithium batteries and unsafe charging practices
Following a recent incident involving a partially exploded e-scooter battery in one of our buildings, we would like to reiterate the dangers and fire risks associated with lithium batteries, particularly when used with chargers that do not meet the manufacturers specifications.
Lithium batteries power many of the devices we use every day, from smartphones to e-bikes. However, their convenience does not come without risks. At East Village, the safety of our residents is paramount, and it is vital that residents understand that when not used correctly, lithium batteries can become a significant fire risk.
When mishandled they can cause devastating fires. Cases of battery-related fires have been increasing, particularly with the growing popularity of electronically powered devices. The most common incidents arise during charging, especially with e-bikes and e-scooters.
Misuse of these batteries or using incorrect chargers can lead to catastrophic outcomes.
The risk of non-manufacturer chargers
Non-manufacturer chargers often fail to meet the safety specifications required for your devices, leading to overheating, explosions, and fires. Should the worst happen, not only could you lose your home, but lives could be at risk.
Recent incidents across the country have seen families displaced and homes destroyed due to fires caused by faulty batteries and chargers. These are not accidents, but preventable disasters that could have been avoided if the proper safety practices were followed.
What you must do to protect yourself and your community
- Charge smart: Always let your batteries cool down before charging them and ensure the charging environment is cool and ventilated.
- Never leave charging devices unattended: Unattended devices, especially overnight, are fires waiting to happen.
- Inspect your batteries: Regular checks for signs of damage, like swelling or leakage, are crucial. Do not try to remove or repair a faulty battery yourself.
- Use proper chargers: Stick to the original charger provided by the manufacturer or purchase certified replacements from reputable sellers. In this case, trying to find a cheap alternative just isn’t worth it.
Our role in your safety
At East Village, we enforce strict rules to prevent these risks. There is a complete ban on storing or charging e-bikes and e-scooters in communal areas, including corridors, stairwells and lobbies. We’ve seen a rise in these devices being stored in communal corridors, which creates serious safety concerns. This rule is in place to eliminate fire hazards and ensure clear evacuation routes. Our building management team diligently ensures these rules are followed, but your cooperation is vital.
We also strongly encourage all residents to avoid storing or charging e-bikes/scooters inside their apartment. This is particularly important if you’re not at home – your e-bike or e-scooter shouldn’t be left unattended, especially if it’s on charge.
Your safety is our priority, and together, we can prevent these hazards from turning into disasters. Act today: inspect your devices, use the right chargers and speak up about unsafe practices.
